Welcome to the Interdisciplinary Education Program on Sustainability
A better society in the future that is both sustainable and peaceful — such a society has never been more desirable than it is today. It would be a society in which all people may live safe, healthy and cultured lives with dignity and self-respect. What will it take to achieve this? The challenges are many. Population growth and economic expansion will lead to global environmental problems (climate change loss of biodiversity, and the prevalence of microplastics), public health problems (new pandemics and food crises) and grave political problems (leading to increased conflicts and wars). Governments and companies are required to disclose the risks that their policies and operations may pose in these areas. Students, the future leaders of society, must understand the interactions between environment, economy, and society. You must also acquire knowledge of the technologies and institutions needed to achieve carbon neutrality, a circular economy, and a society in harmony with nature. We also need to deepen our thinking about the philosophy, ethics, and culture appropriate to an ideal sustainable society. These are the basic education requirements needed in this society of the future. These qualities are required for all graduates of the University of Tokyo, whether they are humanities or science majors. The Interdisciplinary Education Program on Sustainability enables students to acquire these qualities in a systematic way.
